Craig Brock Silverthorne died after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease on June 6, 2018 in Olton, TX. Craig was born November 8, 1933 in Ft. Worth, Texas to Roscoe Q. Silverthorne and Clara Craig Silverthorne. He grew up in Plainview and graduated from Plainview High School where he played football and was active in 4-H and FFA. He graduated from Texas Christian University in 1956 with a BBS in Finance with a concentration in banking; he was a charter member of the Texas Beta chapter, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. After graduation from college, Craig served his country in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX. An accident there during basic training resulted in a broken foot and recuperation at William Beaumont Army Hospital. After rehab, he served as a physical training instructor, and he remained in El Paso for the duration of his service. While he enjoyed the financial merits of banking, Craig decided early on that he did not want to be confined to an office where the dress code was a suit and tie. After discharge from the Army, he returned to Plainview to work in his father’s insurance and mortgage loan business. During that time, he also worked as an oil and gas lease representative in New Mexico. Craig was also a farmer, rancher, and a real estate and mortgage loan broker. He married Jean McLemore on November 26, 1977 in Plainview. Craig was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Plainview Board of City Development, Plainview Downtown Association, Chamber of Commerce, and president of Plainview Board of Realtors. He was also a member of the TCU Frog Club, TCU Britain Society, Ruidoso Jockey Club, Texas Cattle Feeders Association, and Texas and Southwest Cattle Growers Association. He was active with Boy Scout Troop 253, and he served on various boards of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where he was a member for many years. He was a current member of First United Methodist Church, Plainview. Craig enjoyed everything TCU and the Dallas Cowboys, Ruidoso horse races, raising cattle in Hale, Floyd, Swisher, and Castro counties of Texas, as well as Oklahoma and New Mexico. He enjoyed fishing, golf, and travel. He had a great appreciation for the arts, particularly southwest visual art. He also loved fine food and took great joy in grocery shopping. He loved reunions with high school and college friends, but most of all, he was a proud and doting father of his son, Jordan. He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, and godsister, Joann Lloyd Fowler. He is survived by his wife of almost 41 years, and his son Jordan and his wife Kristen of Redmond, Washington. The family would like to thank the nurses, personnel, and volunteers from Runningwater Draw Care Center in Olton, TX for their love and care of Craig for the past three and a half years. A private memorial service will be held for the family at a later date. Should you choose to honor his memory, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the Craig and Jean Silverthorne Endowed Scholarship in Ranch Management at Texas Christian University, Box 297440, Fort Worth, TX 76129, or the Jean and Craig Silverthorne Fine Arts Endowed Scholarship at Wayland Baptist University, Office of Advancement, 1900 West 7th St., Plainview, Texas 79072.
