Doris June Dorrough, 85, was called home on March 20, 2022 in Swisher County. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 25, 2022 at First Baptist Church in Kress, Texas. Burial will follow in Kress Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.
Doris was born in Kress, Texas on June 2, 1936 to Guy T. Hughes and Pearl Strawn Hughes. She married Buster Harley Dorrough on March 1, 1952. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Kress was her lifetime home. She loved the people and was happy and content to live out her 85 years there.
Doris was known for her friendly, sweet and kind spirit. She worked and retired after 23 years at Kress National Bank, where she greeted everyone with a smile. Doris was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, kept the nursery and volunteered in numerous activities. Doris loved Jesus and still talked often about “going to the preachers house” or “going to church” even while she was at the nursing home. It is only fitting that she was called home on a Sunday morning to make the praise and worship service.
Raising three daughters, Doris stayed busy sewing lots of outfits and cheerleading uniforms. She pierced hundreds of ears for most of the town of Kress back in the day. She always had a houseful of girls. Midlife, Doris had a second family raising her twin grandkids. Always a houseful of kids she loved.
Doris was also affectionately known as “Moo Maw.” She was famous for the homemade biscuits which she arose early every morning to handmake. Yes, Buster was a little spoiled.
Playing bridge, along with oil painting and decorating were things she enjoyed. Her home was her ‘happy place’ and she always made you feel welcome. One thing is certain, your coffee cup was never empty!
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Gaynell Hughes; one brother, Van Earl Hughes and one daughter, Debra Lynn Phillips.
Doris is survived by her husband, two daughters, Alanda Tomsu and husband Darrel of Kress, Cindy Jackson and husband Joel of Amarillo; six grandchildren, Ryan Phillips of Lubbock, Jill Thornton and husband Jody of Sulpher Springs, Toby Tomsu and wife Shonda of Olton, Holly Johnson and husband Jared of The colony, Chelsi Welch of Austin and Trey Welch and wife Kendalyn of Victoria, Tx, Jami and husband Troy of Amarillo, Texas, Jason and wife Annette of Louisiana; eight great grandchildren, Jarrett Thornton, Debra Thornton, Landon Thornton, Caitlin Tomsu, Jaxon Tomsu, Jett Tomsu, Presley Welch and Channing Welch; two great great grandchildren, Maxwell Thornton and Oxford Thornton and two brothers Glynn Don Hughes of Canyon and LaRue Hughes and wife Margie of Tulia.
Memorial contributions can be made to Kress Cemetery, Traditions Hospice or a charity of choice.
