Dovie Ann King Gilleland (Plainview)

Dovie Ann King Gilleland was born on October 28, 1934 in Kress, Texas to Odis and Ruby Lee King, the second child and oldest daughter of six. She graduated from Kress High School in 1953 and then attended beauty school in Amarillo, Texas before starting her career as a beautician the next year. She started out working for several local hairdressers (Faye’s Lady Faire, Ethel’s Hair Design, Willa Mae, and Gaylor) before opening her own shop, Dovie’s Hair’em, which she operated until her retirement. During her long career, she won multiple awards, including 1st place at State contest. She was a member of the Plainview Business & Professional Women’s Club, serving as President and Vice President during her tenure. She was also a long-term member of the Pastor’s Class at First Baptist Church, Plainview. Dovie was also a volunteer for the Pink Ladies of Plainview Covenant Hospital. She also did some volunteer work for the First Baptist Church front office. She was also a Charter Member of Soroptimist. She married Jerry Gilleland in 1957 at Kress Baptist Church and they were married until his passing in 2007. Together, they loved and raised two wonderful children, their son, Matthew and daughter, Leslie. Matt and Leslie gave them four lovely granddaughters, whom they cherished. Her love for her family was paramount, and to the end, she was a fiercely loyal and generous supporter of each one. There was no one you wanted in your corner more than Dovie, and she was happy to be there. Her passion and joy for her vocation was evident. In 67 years, she never woke up not wanting to go to work and she loved every minute of it. She was an artist; a painter of her own style. She lived a life filled with various paintbrushes and fine-tuned her techniques for every painting she designed. She found immense joy in helping people to look their best. God gave her a dream, and she lived it to the fullest. Dovie fell asleep in Jesus on the evening of February 28, 2024. She is and will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and community, but her family finds hope in the Resurrection of Christ and the promise of Heaven for all of the faithful. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry J. Gilleland and her son, Matthew Jess Gilleland. Dovie is survived by her daughter, Leslie Gilleland Hartline & husband Jimmy; her daughter-in-law, Torrie Norrell Gilleland; her granddaughters, Lauren Hanson & husband Ryan, Caitlyn Rankin & husband Leighton, Michaela Hevenor & husband Ben and Megan Hartline; eight great grandchildren and her siblings, Bobby King & wife Betsey, Genell Vaught & husband Sam, Willa Dean Holligan & husband Paul, Bettye Jean Sherer and Jerry Wayne King. Funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 9, 2024 at College Heights Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with Dr. Jacob West officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A visitation will be held from 6:00- 8:00 P.M. Friday, March 8, 2024 at Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel.
