Edwin Dean Berner went home to his creator on October the 27th of 2024 at the age of 64. He was under the care of hospice for almost two years due to complications with dementia and Down Syndrome. He passed at home where he lived with his “Buddy and Sis”, David and Denise Kellum for the past 21 years.
Ed was born on August eighth of 1960 in Spearman, Texas to Wallace (Wally) and Myra Berner, and welcomed by his sisters, Cindy and Denise. He was a beloved gift to his family and all who knew him. He shared his love freely, considering everyone his buddy, and his compassion was a true reflection of Christ’s love.
Ed never abided by doctors predictions of a twenty year life span or by any other predictions. He lived fully by the truth of who God created him to be and was nurtured at home with his parents encouraging him to do everything he was capable of, fostering his independence and resilience throughout his life. Ed graduated from Pringle-Morse ISD in 1982 and from Apostolic Faith Bible College in Baxter Springs, Kansas in 1993. As a young adult he enjoyed an active life, driving a pickup truck around the farm, changing irrigation water, riding horses, moving cattle, and even helping with yard work. Although he briefly tried his hand at driving a tractor, he tended to fall asleep at the wheel, putting an end to his tractor-driving career. He later worked, voluntarily, at a local hospice and then with David for many years putting in phone and internet lines. He was a hard-working man who was always ready to lend a hand.
Ed was passionate about many things ranging from a strong love for Jesus that brought tears to his eyes almost instantaneously to being a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, Texas Longhorns and Elvis Presley. He was a proud member of the Plainview Stars Special Olympics bowling team and enjoyed his time with his teammates.
Ed’s journey and his unwavering love left an indelible impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was known for his ornery tricks, joyful spirit and polite disposition. He remained grateful and full of love, smiles and kisses until the end of our time with him.
Ed was preceded in death by his mother, Myra Dickson Berner, his father, Wallace Berner, and his bonus mom, Jimmie Hazen Berner. He is survived by his sisters, Cindy (Ron) Smith and Denise (David) Kellum, his eight nieces and nephews—Desley (Jennifer) Kellum, Keisha (Brennin) Dawson, Shea (Brian) Tinder Berner, Brynn (Chance) Beasley, Derek (Abbie) Kellum, Dean (Brooke) Kellum, D’Anna (Colby) Coleman, and D’Nae Kellum—as well as eighteen great-nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Ed will be held on Sunday, November 3rd, in the foyer of Harvest Christian Fellowship at 3:00 pm, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 pm in the worship center. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 pm on Monday, November 4th, at Holt Community Cemetery outside Spearman.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Plainview Stars Special Olympics Team (4428 Olton Rd, Plainview, TX 79072) or the JHB Memorial Scholarship (Starfish Kenya, 760 Clear Lake City Blvd, Webster, TX 77598)
