Tulia, Texas— “Granny Smith”, Helen Pearl Crow Smith was born December 19th, 1928 to Fred Henry and Sallie Buna Crow in Morton Texas. She was 91 years young. She had a sister Billie Joe Lemons and her baby brother Fred Noel Crow. She was born and raised 2 miles east of Morton on a small farm. They fed chickens, milked and fed cows, drew water for the house before heading to school at first by wagon, but finally got to ride the school bus. After school they did chores, homework by candlelight, and shared bath water. They farmed cotton, wheat, peanuts, soybeans and large garden. She was very proud of her farm life, her family, and her honest upbringing. She graduated salutatorian of Morton high school 1946, Attended Wayland Baptist College, and Graduated from Hardin Simmons Baptist University in 1950 with a bachelor’s in business administration. Later she attended West Texas State University, and finally got her master’s degree at Amarillo College in 1971 in Education and Math. She has 6 children whom she loved very much. Linda, Lynn, Dianne. Doyce, Leonard and Sally. She raised them from Morton to Lazbuddie, Muleshoe, Amarillo, Paducah, Amherst, and finally settled in Tulia where she went to college and taught school while raising her kids. She taught reading, Ged classes and study Hall. For 33 years. She was a social butterfly, enjoyed talking to people visiting friends and attending her social events, which included Retired teachers Association. Red Hat Society, Historical Society, WMU, Ladies Axillary at Swisher Hospital, Sunday School Class, and Church at the First Baptist Church. She demanded respect, never met a stranger and seldom missed church. Preceding her in death are her parents Fred and Buna Crow of Morton. Son, Doyle Lynn Smith, of Las Vegas Nevada, a grandchild Christopher Smith, Her sister and brother in law Billie and Short Lemons, and a sister in law Bonnie Crow. She leaves behind her children Linda Doyletta (Danny) Dunne of Floydada, Dianne Laverna Haney of Tulia, Doyce LaVerne (Deana) of Overton Nevada, Leonard Henry (Glenda) of Sunset, and Sally Helen (Brent) of Tulia. NUMEROUS grand kids and a multitude of great grands and several great, great grandchildren. She always said that every single one counted but no one is counting. Her brother Noel (Mona Kay) of Morton. A cherished abundance on nieces and nephews, and many, many friends. Always remember treat others the way you want to be treated, have respect especially for you elders. She reminded us to always have faith in God, remember who you belong too, and don’t forget to " Be good boys and girls".
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am Saturday, June 20, 2020 in the First Baptist Church, Tulia. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. Online condolences may be made at www.kornerstonefunerals.com.
