Hood, took his flight to Heaven on February 10, 2021. Hugh was born near Haleyville, Alabama on November 21, 1935 to Alter and Maybelle Hood. As a child he rescued an injured red bone hound, who he called “Ole Red”. He and Ole Red spent his childhood squirrel hunting in the woods of Northern Alabama and harvesting the fields. In his early teens he lived in Florida where he met the love of his life, Joy Thomas. They were married in 1953 and celebrated 67 years of life together, and they had 5 daughters. Hugh got a job at a lumber mill shortly after they married which led to his successful career as a Builder and Developer. In 1963 he moved his young family of seven to New Mexico where he left a legacy by leading the development and building of a community that grew to be the 3rd largest city in New Mexico, Rio Rancho. After moving to Roswell New Mexico in 1978 to develop the Briar Ridge Subdivision, he and Joy ultimately found their way to Petersburg Texas in 1992. This is where they set down roots and found the love of many dear friends. Over his life-time Hugh owned and operated several businesses related to the construction industry. He was a hard worker all his life, boldly taking on new challenges to make a way for his family. All his experiences gave him a host of stories to share! From hunting in the woods as a child, plowing the Alabama fields behind the mules, hunting in Colorado, building on the Indian reservations of New Mexico, serving as a deputy in the Bernalillo County Posse, planning celebrity golf tournaments, personally remodeling homes and porches, picking vegetables out of the gardens in Petersburg – the topics are endless! Hugh is survived by his wife, Joy Hood, his five daughters and their husbands, Vickie and Dwight Kern of Rio Rancho NM, Nena and Steve Scrambling of Rio Rancho NM, Jan and Todd Measles of Petersburg TX, Shari and Scott Barnes of Lubbock TX and Dawn and Kraig Bowen of Henry NE; his sister Peggy Hood Burnett of Waycross GA; 10 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren; and many other extended family members across the US. Hugh leaves behind many dear friends who he deeply cherished, several who honored him in planning and contributing to the celebration of his life. He made many new friends in the caregivers at Wedgewood South Assisted Living Center in Lubbock Texas, who will never be forgotten by his family. Hugh was predeceased by his parents Alter and Maybelle Hood, his brothers Andrew Hood, Elzie Coleman Hood, Hubert Hood, Roy Hood, Foy Hood, and his sisters Lona Mae Hood Andrews, Oma Fay Hood, and Nena Fay Hood.
