James Lewis Walker was born on November 14, 1939, in Plainview, TX. He was the eldest son of Herbert and Celia May (Wicker) Walker. He was a long-term farmer in the Claytonville area planting his first crop even before graduating from Plainview High School in 1958. Lewis married Joyce Jeanette (Turner) on April 25, 1963, in Plainview. Lewis was an active leader, serving on several board of directors including Swisher Co-op Gin Board, Plainview Cotton Cooperative Compress, Swisher County Museum Board, 4-H leader, Texas Angus Association, and others. He was a longtime member of the Claytonville Baptist Church. After Joyce retired, their love for adventure took them to several states visiting many historical sights and gaining fish stories to share on his morning coffee runs. Like clockwork he would visit gins and elevators around the county to catch up with old friends over a good cup of hot coffee. Lewis enjoyed being around people the most, whether that was at dances, antique tractor shows, and all things involving his grandkids. He and Lynett were active in Cowboy Action Shooting. He would eventually get his grandchildren, Tizzy and James, to love the sport. The four of them made many memorable trips to different shoots, squeezing in the occasional fishing trip. Lewis loved to dance. He would drive far and wide to participate in dance groups several nights a week. Lewis loved to drive to the county and inspect all the new projects. Lewis will be remembered as a hardworking farmer that never stopped with his many activities and the social events until he passed away.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Celia Walker, his daughter, Janna Walker and his wife, Joyce Walker.
He is survived by his daughter, Lynett Walker of Tulia, his son, Judson Walker, and wife Mary of Kress; his brothers, Garland “Buddy” Walker of Amarillo, and David Walker of Plainview; his brother-in-law, Jerry Turner of Sequim, Washington; his special companion, Ethel Edwards of Tulia; two grandchildren, Tizzy Beck and husband Dillon of Llano and James Walker of Tulsa, OK, and his great grandson, Daxton Beck of Llano.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Swisher County 4-H Unsponsored Trip Fund, 310 West Broadway, Tulia, TX 79052.
