Duke grew up on a farm outside of Quitaque and attended school in Quitaque. Duke served his country during the time of the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. Upon his discharge from the army, Duke ventured to Colorado seeking work. It was there he met the love of his life, Mary, and they were married April 14, 1954. Duke and Mary embarked on many adventures and challenges in life and faced almost all of them as a team. They began their family in Colorado and spent many years there before settling back in Quitaque in 1972. During the 1980s, they also worked and lived in Saudi Arabia and Africa. Duke had an adventurous spirit and was always ready to travel anywhere or meet his next friend. He was a storyteller, loved people, and will be remembered for colorfully recounting his many adventures in life. Duke was also an active member of the community and was always willing to help where he was needed. He helped with various community functions over the years, mowed millions of blades of grass, and spent countless hours at the church, doing everything from trimming hedges to delivering cookies for the kids after Bible school. Duke also had a keen interest in cars, especially classic cars, and could look at an old car and tell you the make and model without hesitation. All those fortunate to have known Duke also knew of his love of music, especially country music, and Duke seemed always ready to shuffle onto a dance floor. Duke loved to dance and when the music started, he and Mary could be found dancing across the floor, street, or concrete slab with smiles on their faces. They often did not stop until the music ended. Duke loved life and he enjoyed many things, but nothing more than his family and he was especially grateful for the times spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were the light of his life and he always wanted to hear about their latest endeavors and accomplishments. The music has ended for Duke’s earthly life, but the eternal dance will continue as he is reunited with his beloved Mary.
