Jerrell Johnson Young (Plainview)

Jerrell Johnson Young, 80, of Halfway, Texas passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2022. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 19, 2022, at First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Terry Simmons and Rev. Jacob West assisting. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. A visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6 to 7 P.M. at Kornerstone Plainview. Jerrell Johnson Young was born September 18, 1941, to John Young and Bonnice Johnson Young. He moved to Halfway when he was eight years old and attended schools in Halfway until they consolidated into Plainview. He attended Texas Tech before returning home to farm with his father. Jerrell married Mary Dell Sanders on March 25, 1961, in Olton, Texas. He farmed in Halfway for many years before retiring in 2005. Jerrell was the music director at First Baptist Church of Halfway where he also served as a deacon, was an RA leader, and taught Sunday School. At First Baptist Church Plainview he served as a deacon, drove the bus for church trips, and sang in the choir. He was a member of the Halfway Volunteer Fire Department, weather watchers, and the Halfway Water Department. Jerrell enjoyed fishing, snow skiing, and riding motorcycles. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Hollis Young and Bonnice Irene Young, and his adoptive mother who raised him, Eva Louise Young. Jerrell is survived by his wife Mary Dell Young; two sons, John Jerrell Young and wife Dorothy of Halfway, Texas, and Wendell Paul Young and wife Susan of North Richland Hills, Texas. Four grandchildren, John Hollis Young and wife Blair; Madison Young; Shelby Young; Whitney Young; and one great-grandchild, Mac James Young. The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church, 205 W. 8th Street, Plainview, TX 79072.
