Jo Ann Rogers, loving mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 92 on December 21, 2022, in Fort Worth, Texas. Jo Ann was born the youngest of three siblings at her family’s home in Lubbock, Texas, on February 4, 1930, to parents Harry and Winnie Pilcher Harvey. They moved to Smyer, Texas, when she was eight years old, where she attended school, played basketball, and served as team captain for two years. They later moved to Lazbuddie, Texas, during her senior year of high school, where she graduated with the Class of 1947.
After graduation, Jo Ann traveled to Springfield, Missouri, to train as a teletype operator, then moved to Plainview, Texas, to work at the Western Union office in the Skaggs Building. It was in Plainview she met her sweetheart, Gordon Rogers. The couple wed in 1949 and went on to have two beloved sons, Ronny and Glenn. Over the years, Jo Ann worked at a variety of places around town: her family’s service station, Avon, the Gold Bond Stamp Store, and Evalene’s Imports. She could also be found driving the Senior Citizens Center van, transporting senior adults to and from the center, grocery store, and bank. Some of her hobbies included crocheting, counted cross stitch, and other crafts.
After her retirement in 1992, Jo Ann and Gordon enjoyed camping and traveling throughout the United States in their RV trailer. She loved spending time with her grandkids, whether it was doing crafts, attending sporting events or camping. Additionally she loved making food for her family. Her grandkids loved her cheesy enchiladas and brownies especially.
A woman of faith, Jo Ann was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Plainview, Texas, until her move to Fort Worth in 2020. She dedicated many years of her life to teaching Sunday school. She was also an active volunteer in the community well into her 80s, and she was recognized as RSVP Volunteer of the Month in September 2017 at the age of 77. She proudly served as a Pink Lady for Covenant Hospital Auxiliary for almost two decades, and her helping spirit can best be summarized by the inscription on one of her favorite lapel pins: “Caring is a Work of Heart.”
Jo Ann is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Gordon Rogers; son, Glenn Rogers; granddaughter, Brandy Wilson and siblings, James Harvey and Ruth Schaefer. She is survived by her son Ronny Rogers and wife Jill of Runaway Bay, Texas; daughter-in-law, Shelda Rogers; grandson-in-law, Russell Wilson; granddaughter, Chesna Myers and husband Adam of Fort Worth, Texas, grandson Luke Rogers and wife Meghan of Lubbock, Texas; great grandchildren Sydney and Jack Wilson, Sam and Violet Myers, and Emmett and Joy Rogers.
She is lovingly remembered by friends and family for her sweet and caring nature. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her greatest joy. The family would also like to thank neighbors Mark and Marta Hardin, and Marsha and Jack Allen for their wonderful love and care prior to her move to Fort Worth.
Visitation will be held at Kornerstone Funeral Home from 5 - 7 PM Wednesday, December 28, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Kornerstone Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Plainview Memorial Park under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors.
