December 6, 1925 — May 4, 2020

Joan Hutto (Tulia)

Tulia, Texas--Joan Horseman Hutto left this earthy life on May 4, 2020 at 94 years of age.   She was born December 6, 1925 to Frank and Florence (Gray) Horseman in High Wycombe, England.  She was the youngest of 5 children:  Frank Jr., Les, Clarice and Doris.  She had fond childhood memories of gardening with her father and of family outings in the English countryside.  As a youth, she spent many nights in the bomb shelters where she learned to do needlework to pass the time.  Later, she met H.F. “Hank” Hutto at a USO dance while he was stationed nearby serving with the United States Air Force.  They married and she came to America to live and she later became a US citizen.

Joan was involved in many organizations and activities.  She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and later returned as a leader when one was needed in Tulia.  She was awarded Distinguished Woman Award by the Girl Scout Council of Amarillo.  She served as director of the MHMR Satellite School for Special Needs Adults for many years and was involved in Special Olympics.  Joan was one of the nominees for Panhandle Plains Woman of the Year.  At First Baptist Church of Tulia, she was involved in WMU, taught in Mother’s Day Out, and served on the Bereavement Committee.  She gave presentations to civic clubs and school groups about flag folding and flag etiquette.

Joan loved her family, neighbors and friends.  Her jam tarts were the family favorite and no family gathering was complete without them.  An avid flower gardener, Joan especially loved her roses.  She loved working with children and special needs individuals and was a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings, as well as her son, Terry James Hutto, and grandson, Wade Allen James.  She is survived by her son, Gary Hutto, of Tulia; her daughter, Julie James and husband Gerald (Buddy) James of Amarillo, daughter-in-law, Debbi Hutto of Lubbock and 5 grandchildren: Leslie Gosnell of Lubbock, Stacey James of Brownfield, Lisa Jenkins of Lubbock, T.J. Hutto of Ankeny, Iowa, and Candace Norrod of Lubbock, 9 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
