Joey Cordova (Plainview)

Joey Enrique Cordova, passed away on December 16, 2021 at the age of 54 at his home in Plainview, Texas. His battle with pancreatic cancer over the past year showed his courage in fighting life’s toughest challenges with a smile. Despite his pain, Joey came out a hero staying strong until the very end. Joey was born in San Diego, California. He was the first born son born to Gloria Dimas Montano, and Henry Cordova. Joey grew up in Tucumcari, New Mexico and graduated from high school there in 1986. After high school, Joey enlisted in the United States Navy, and served his country for 20 years. He was a proud Navy Seabee with a “Can Do” spirit. Joey was a Gulf War veteran, and a decorated soldier earning many accolades including the Presidential Unit Citation, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Seabee Combat Warfare Insignia. He was very proud of his military service. He spent many years of his career on foreign land, and bravely defended our country as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. As a Navy Seabee, Joey built establishments that housed United States Marine servicemen during the War on Terror. He had a hand in helping build Guantánamo Bay, after the attacks on September 11, 2001. His humanitarian efforts also helped build homes for refugee families overseas. After his retirement in 2007, Joey took a position with the Texas Department of Transportation. He was the Amarillo District’s Lab Supervisor, and served in the role of Civil Engineer. He worked for the state of Texas in that role for 14 years. Joey was an avid Los Angeles Chargers fan. He was a proud season ticket holder in the new SoFi Stadium. He owned more Los Angeles Chargers paraphernalia than most NFL team stores. GO BOLTS! On July 5, 2021, Joey married the love of his life, Sandra Cordova who survives him. He is also survived by, his mother, Gloria Dimas Montano, his father Henry Cordova and his wife Molly. His three daughters, Amber Cordova and Bobby Gruber, Jessica Cordova, and Chantel Cordova. Sandra’s children Billy Dulakis and his wife Laney. Shaina Hembree and her husband Karson. He is also survived by his beautiful granddaughter Ellie Faye Gruber and three bonus grandsons Bryce Dulakis, Brady Dulakis, and Karter Hembree. Joey was the oldest of eight siblings. Surviving him is his brother David Cordova and his wife Angelica. His brother Robert Cordova and Melissa Mendez. His brother Tony Cordova and his wife Julie. His sister Misty Davis and Junior Rodriguez. His sister Brandi Montano and Paul Romero. His sister Casey Cordova, and his brother Joshua Cordova. He has also survived by many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins who adored him and who looked up to him for the loving soul that he was. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 23, 2021 in the Kornerstone Chapel. Interment will follow in Plainview Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at the funeral home.
