John Pierce Horton Jr., a beloved brother, uncle, and friend to so very many, passed away at the age of 81, in Plainview, TX. Funeral services will be held at First Christian Church in Planview on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. with Lanny Voss officiating. Interment will follow at Plainview Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Monday, January 13, 2025, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview. The community is invited to join the celebration of his life.
Pierce was born in Abilene, TX on April 18, 1943, to John Pierce Sr. and Ruby E. Blackburn Horton. He lived in Merkel, TX until the age of 5, where he moved to Plainview, TX with his family. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1961 where he began his career in bookkeeping for E. Huffstetler Tractor Company, working for 5 years. He worked for Pioneer Natural Gas in the Drafting Department for the next 5 years, and began working for Hale County State Bank as a teller in 1970, until 1986.
Pierce Horton was a man of many talents and interests. He began pursuing fine objects at an early age – art work, rare glassware, jewelry, period pieces of furniture, etc. He and his mother, Ruby, shared a passion for collecting such items, and traveled many miles in search of. Pierce could go into a crowded venue filled with antiquities and leave with the rarest piece of the lot. He combined all his knowledge and skill and opened Horton’s Antique Shop in downtown Plainview, TX. in 1991. Those that visited his shop over the years may have remembered being welcomed in by his beloved companion, Beau, a feisty grey poodle, who would rush to the door to meet each guest, followed up by a friendly greeting from the shop owner himself. Pierce loved visiting with all who came into his shop and was eager to help in any way he could. His love for antiques and running his shop for 33 years brought him a great deal of happiness and joy.
He will be fondly remembered as a loyal and true friend to his many acquaintances and customers. His helpfulness and kindness were well known among everyone with whom he dealt. He was never too busy to come to anyone’s aid. In addition, he was a talented artist, wood worker, and decorator. He will be dearly missed by many friends and family.
Pierce is preceded in death by his parents, John Pierce, Sr. and Ruby E. Blackburn Horton; his brother-in-law, Charles “Chuck” Humphreys, and a half sister, Dorothy Shaver.
Pierce is survived by, his Sister; Eva Faye Humphreys of Plainview, TX, his nieces & nephew; Melinda Humphreys of Ruidoso, NM, Tim Humphreys and wife Lois of Canyon, Tx, Candi Garcia and husband Robert of Plainview, TX. Great Nieces & nephews; Justin Coleman & Katie Stoll of Brooklyn Center, MN, Ryan Humphreys of Canyon, TX, Kirsten Perez and husband Adrian of Canyon, TX, Harlie Flores and husband Adam of Plainview, TX, and Hannah Garcia of Plainview, TX, one great-great niece; Olivia Perez of Canyon TX.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to: First Christian Church, located at 1800 Interstate 27 Service Rd, Plainview, TX 79072.
