Tulia, Texas-Lela Mae Nevins, 96, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 in Amarillo. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 12, 2021 in the Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel with Mr. Bob Colson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia.
Lela Mae was born on May 18, 1924 in Pampa, Texas to Frank and Cora Johnson and was the eighth child of 12. In October 1926, the family moved to a farm eight miles southwest of Happy, Texas. She attended schools at Childress Community and Happy, Texas. She married Ralph Nevins on June 16, 1939 at Tulia. They were married 69 years when Ralph passed away on July 6, 2008. She worked at and managed the Tulia High School snack bar for 20 years.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Ralph Nevins, five brothers: Johnnie, Jimmie, Virgil and twin infants Ray and Roy Johnson, six sisters: Oneta Ewing, Edith Newby, Evelyn Holloway, Helen Barlow, Carrie Belle Bradley and Billy Mays and one son-in-law: Don Sutterfield.
She is survived by one daughter: Shirley Sutterfield of Lockney, three sons: Wayne and wife Yvonne Nevins of Tulia, Ken and wife Debra Nevins of Sweetwater, Dale and wife Carol Nevins of Canyon, eight grandchildren,15 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.
Memorials may be made to the Children’s Home of Lubbock, 4404 Idalou Rd. Lubbock, Texas 79403 or to the Central Church of Christ, 300 N. Donley, Tulia, Texas 79088.
