Lynn Roddy Brown - beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, peacefully passed away on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024, at the age of 78. She spent Christmas with Jesus this year and is now in the presence of the Lord. Lynn was born on October 14, 1946, in Lubbock, Texas and grew up in the small West Texas farming community of Hale Center.
She will be remembered with love by her husband of 57 years, Bryan William Brown (Bill), their children Kimberley Margaret Wilson (Craig William Wilson), Bryan Wesley Brown (Jennifer Lyn Brown), Nancy Elizabeth Brown (Taylor James McRae); four grandchildren Lillian Grace Wilson, Wesley Elijah Wilson, and, by marriage, Charlotte Jayde O’Neill and Nicholas Wayne Allen Knapp, as well as her sisters, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Lynn and Bill met at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas and were married in 1967 in the First United Methodist Church in Hale Center. Shortly thereafter, they departed for the Northeast, moving to Philadelphia and then to Princeton, and, after ten years, returning to Houston. They also later spent two years in Rochester, NY.
As a mother of three, Lynn encouraged independence, creativity, and education, and advocated fiercely for her son, who lost most of his hearing after a traumatic birth. She made sure that Wes received what he needed in life to succeed, encouraging the use of sign language by the family.
After completing a degree in Science Education at Texas Tech University in 1968, Lynn worked as a computer programmer to help support the family, allowing Bill to complete his PhD in economics and establish a career as a university professor.
Later in life, she became an award-winning quilter and artist, featured in many magazines, and the author of three top-selling quilting books. She enjoyed sharing her love of quilting, lecturing on quilting, and building deep lifelong friendships in numerous quilting groups, including the Piecemakers, Blockbuilders Bee, Neartown Bee, and Quilt Guild of Greater Houston. Lynn was well known for her exceptional cooking; her specialties were pies and Thanksgiving. She also pursued genealogy, spending many hours at courthouses, cemeteries, and libraries to research family history.
Lynn was a steadfast friend, reaching out when others were struggling, prioritizing time together, and holding onto many relationships for decades. She was also a friend to those outside her circle, from nurses to neighbors to complete strangers.
Lynn overcame many challenges in her life, especially with her health. Warrior is the only way to describe the suffering she endured, and she was inspirational in the way she handled hard events, often finding the humor in painful situations. She was a natural storyteller and laughed often. Through her wit, she shared the unvarnished truth about her life. It was her own brand of vulnerability.
Lynn will be laid to rest in the cemetery in Hale Center, Texas next to her parents Trudy and Wesley Roddy, and her grandfather, John Milton Roddy. A memorial service for Lynn will be held in Houston, Texas on January 4th, at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Bellaire United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. Those wishing to pay their respects and celebrate her life are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation.
Lynn’s loss is deeply felt by her family and all those who knew and loved her. Her memory will continue to live on in those whose lives she touched.
