Matthew Jess Gilleland was born on September 24, 1961 in Plainview, Texas to Jerry and Dovie Gilleland. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1980, where he met his lifelong sweetheart, Torrie Norrell. They married on August 18, 1984, and had three daughters, Lauren, Caitlyn, and Michaela. Matt graduated from Texas A&M University, College Station, Class of 1984, and always maintained a deep love for his alma mater. He loved fishing, hunting, motorcycle riding, cooking and barb queuing for his family, Aggie football and baseball, going on traveling adventures with his wife, and he had a love for airplanes. He also loved watching his girls playing sports and spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren. He was a faithful man of God with a big heart and lived life at full speed and full of all the things that truly matter. He is survived by his wife of almost 37 years, Torrie; his daughters and sons-in-laws, Lauren Hanson and Ryan of Bryan, Caitlyn Rankin and Leighton of Plainview, and Michaela Hevenor and Ben of Bandera; his mother, Dovie Gilleland of Plainview; father and mother-in-law, Stewart and Elaine Norrell of Plainview; sister and brother-in-law, Leslie Hartline and Jimmy of Lubbock; brother-in-laws, Ritchie Norrell and wife Sandy of Mansfield, and Lance Norrell and wife Jennifer of Venus; his 4 grandsons and soon-to-be 3 granddaughters; seven nieces and two nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Jerry Gilleland. Matt fell asleep in Jesus surrounded by his wife and daughters in Lubbock on May 26, 2021. This devoted husband, loving father, loyal son, protective brother, and beloved Pappy was dearly loved and is profoundly missed, but his family finds hope in the Resurrection of Christ and the promise of Heaven for all the faithful.
