John Michael “Mike” McDonough, 75, of Plainview died Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at UMC in Lubbock following a short illness.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Northwest Church of Christ in Plainview with Barry Francis of Silverton and Andrew Francis of Plainview officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Kornerstone Funeral Home.
McDonough was born September 12, 1949, in Plainview, Texas, to John F. and Barbara Mickey McDonough, and was a member of Rock Creek Church of Christ in Silverton.
He became an Eagle Scout as a member of Boy Scout Troop 221.
He graduated from Plainview High School in 1968, going on to attend Lubbock Christian University. He graduated from LCU in 1972 as a member of its first four-year graduating class.
He worked with his father, John, and brother, Mitchell McDonough, building and remodeling houses in and around Plainview for almost 10 years.
In 1982, he began a career with the City of Plainview, starting out in the Building Department and later serving as Assistant City Manager.
On July 5, 1986, he and Cornelia Ashby Patty were married in Plainview.
In 1992, he was approached by Gary Garrison of Fred Garrison Oil Company to build a convenience store. That job worked into a management position involving the dispatching of fuel tanker trucks for the company which lasted until 2016.
In 2018, he took a job as court bailiff for Hale County until 2019. A Master Peace Officer, McDonough had served as a reserve deputy for the Hale County Sheriff’s Department since 1986 and held the rank of reserve captain.
On May 24, 2022, he was sworn in as Plainview City Council representative for District 3, a post he held until his death.
He was also a longtime board member of the Plainview Community Concerts Association.
Survivors include his wife, Cornelia; daughters Kyra and Chris Johnson of Fort Worth and Randi Truelock of Brownfield; son John Franklin McDonough III and Leeanne of Pampa; brothers Doug and Brenda McDonough of Plainview and Mitchell and Veronica McDonough of Hereford; sisters, Marilyn and Terry Vieregge of Lubbock and Michelle and Barry Francis of Silverton; 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, plus 1 on the way.
