Mittie Sue Goff, 72, of Plainview passed away in Lubbock on July 19, 2024.

Mittie Goff went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 19, 2024. Graveside rites will be held November 22, 2024 in Amarillo, Texas at Memorial Gardens at 10 a.m. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview, Texas.

She was born in Plainview on Nov 11, 1951 to Herchiel and Helena Hembree. Mittie graduated from Plainview High School in 1971 and went to college at Adams State in Alamosa Co. where she graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in special education. Mittie proudly served her country, first in the Army and then reenlisting in the Navy, where she was a munitions and budget clerk. While she was enlisted in the Navy she met and married her first husband Les Fowler. Together they had two daughters Patricia and Celeste. In her time in the military, she was able to travel the world and immerse her family in different cultures and experiences, spending a significant amount of time in Singapore and Japan. After being medically retired from the military she became an Ombudsman, supporting military spouses and families during deployments and periods of transition on Hamilton Airforce Base in California and in Amarillo Tx. After her time in the military, she decided to pursue her first dream which was to become a special education teacher. Mittie started her civilian career as a summer librarian at Hamilton AFB but transitioned to teaching Special Education at Hamiliton Elementary at the start of the school year. Her journey as an educator took her to Amarillo and from there she started working with the girls at Girls Town in Borger, TX. While there, her goal was to show the girls that most obstacles could be overcome. During this time, she met and married her second husband William “Bill” Goff. The closing of Girls Town led her back to her hometown of Plainview where she began teaching at Lakeside Learning Center until her retirement in 1995 due to a necessary kidney transplant. Not one to sit still, she then began working at the Plainview Daily Herald as a customer service representative. She was proud of being from Plainview and loved being able to come back and serve that community by delivering newspapers and talking to customers. Mittie was a strong advocate for education and believed that a good education could change the course of a child’s life. She served with the local chapter of American Association of University Women (AAUW) helping young women earn scholarships for college in Amarillo and Plainview. She also instilled a great love of learning in both of her daughters and was very proud of what each had accomplished. Mittie cherished her family.

She is preceded in death by her father Herchiel Hembree and mother Helena Hembree Rush, two brothers Gene Hembree of Plainview Tx, and Eddie Glenn Hembree of Perry, Ok.

She is survived by her sister Nancy Stewig and husband Monte and two sisters-in-law Cynthia Hembree of Moore OK, and Frankie Hembree of Plainview, TX as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was especially proud her daughters Patricia Emery and husband Sonny of Lake Wales Fl., and Celeste Smith and husband Kirk of Plainview and of all 8 of her grandchildren Caleb Ward of Bartow Fl, Hannah Ward of Highland City, Fl, Lindy Ward, Trace Emery, Sparrow Emery of Lake Wales Fl.
