A visitation will be held at 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday, October 7, 2024 at the funeral home.
Mona was born on August 22, 1931 at her home in Clarita, Oklahoma to S.D. and Tressa Mae Nelson. She grew up on the family farm where she learned the value of hard work by milking cows, plowing, chopping weeds and gathering eggs with her siblings, Don and Squib. The Nelson family moved to Tulia, Texas in 1947 when Mona was 17 years old. She graduated from Tulia High School in 1948. Mona attended and graduated from West Texas State Teacher College now known as West Texas A&M University.
Mona started her greatest life chapter when she married Nelson L. Borchardt, of Tulia on September 4, 1953. Mona and Nelson were a great team! They built or bought several agriculture businesses together as they both farmed and ranched in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. They were loving and supportive parents to their six children: K Linn, Shelly, Leah Beth, Joel, Billy Sam and Christi Beth.
Mona created a busy and happy home for her family and friends. She was involved in many community activities or clubs. She was a member of the Tulia United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible Bowl Classes. She was a charter member of the Progressive Study Club, International Order of the Rainbow Girls, Tulia Senior Citizens, delivered meals on wheels, Tulia Boy Scouts Leader, Town and Country 4-H Club and was chosen to be Tulia’s Mother of the Year in 1969. Mona was the election judge for Swisher County Precinct #2 for many years.
All who knew Mona, knew that she was a genuine character, a smart, blunt and witty woman and friend that never met a stranger.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Borchardt, her three daughters, K Linn, Borchardt, Shelly Borchardt, Leah Beth Borchardt, and her brother, Don Nelson.
She is survived by her daughter, Christi Beth Fisher and husband James, her two sons, Joel Borchardt and Billy Sam Borchardt and wife Kenee, her brother, J Larry (Squib) Nelson, her sister-in-law, Rena Nelson, eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
Her family is beyond grateful that she is no longer suffering, and they appreciate the many prayers, cards, visits and love shown from the community.
In lieu of flowers, the Tulia Senior Citizens, 619 SE 2nd St Tulia, TX 79088 or the Tulia Methodist Church, 119 N Briscoe Ave, Tulia, TX 79088 .
