Tulia, Texas--Neta Ann Newsom Todd, 88, passed peacefully Thursday, June 29, at Country View Living in Dimmitt. A small-town girl who lived a big life, Neta was born on the family farm at Wayside, Texas, in Armstrong County on May 1, 1935. Following grade school in Wayside, she went to Happy High School, where she was Junior Class Secretary. Neta played basketball under Coach Bud Roberts, and some say she could “throw a one-handed basketball pass like a baseball.” Neta was proud of the fact the team played in two Regional Tournaments.
In 1952, she married Dean Todd, and the couple had three children, who later attended Happy schools.
The family lived on a farm southwest of Happy and stayed busy supporting school and community
activities. After the children were grown, Dean and Neta moved to Tulia, where she continued to live
after Dean’s death in 2000.
Always a hard worker, Neta was employed by Prairie Grain in Tulia for 20 years and Tulia Livestock
Auction for 31 years, 20 of those as the office manager. She enjoyed working in her yard and loved her
devoted “puppies.”
She spent the last years of her life in Dimmitt at Country View Living, where she was beloved by
everyone, including other residents and the nurses and staff. The family is especially grateful for the
care and affection shown to Neta.
Neta is survived by daughter DeAnn Jones of Tulia, son Terry Todd and wife Cindy of Austin and son
Mike Todd and wife Cindy of Canyon. She was Grandmama to grandchildren Sheri Bertelson, Heather
Edwards, Michael Todd, Brittany Romero, Tanna Terry, Douglas Todd, and Michael Collins, and seven
great grandchildren, Caleb Butler, Cambree Edwards, Beni Romero, Klara Terry, Kendal Terry, Samuel
Todd and Charlie Todd. She is also survived by her loving sister Laraine Melton of Tulia, several nieces
and nephews and many, many friends.
She was preceded in death by husband Dean Todd, parents Harvie and Wilma Newsom, brother A.J. Newsom, sister Kirksye Cope, son-in-law Jeff Jones and niece Marilyn Raymond.
A celebration of Neta’s life will be held on Monday, July 3, at 10:30 a.m. at the Tulia Methodist Church,
with Pastor Sam Espinoza officiating. Visitation with the family will follow at the church. Graveside
services at Rose Hill Cemetery will be private. Arrangements are by Kornerstone Funeral Directors in
Tulia.
