Robert William Matthews, 92, of Plainview, Texas passed away Sunday, November 5, 2023. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Sean McConathy officiating. Burial will follow in Plainview Memorial Park under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview, Texas. Robert was born on May 10, 1931 to Richard and Lillie Matthews in Floyd County, Texas on the family farm. He attended schools in the Providence Community before he graduated from Lockney High School in 1950. Robert served in the U.S. Army for two years before returning home to farm. He married Mauriene Smithson on December 23, 1957 in Dimmitt, Texas. He farmed for many, many years. After retiring from farming, he continued gardening, growing fresh vegetables and pulling weeds. He was a member of the Texas Farm Bureau. Robert enjoyed playing softball while in his 20’s. He enjoyed supporting the Flying Queens and hardly missed a game. He also supported the Rangers, Cowboys and Red Raiders. Robert enjoyed dancing and was involved in several dance groups. (until covid, then just 1 group started back after, but he didn't miss) (didn't learn to dance until after retiring) He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Lillie Matthews; his wife, Mauriene Smithson Matthews and two sisters, Arlene Jones and Gladys Griffith. He is survived by his daughter, Robin Matthews of Lubbock, Texas; one sister, Rosalee King of San Angelo, Texas and many nieces and nephews.
