Sally Ann (Hart) Meeks died in her home in Plainview on October 24, 2024, at age 80. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends. Sally, born in Groton, South Dakota on November 24, 1943, was the daughter of Naval Commander John and Marion Hart. Sally graduated from Baylor University, where she earned the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1965.
On June 17, 1967, Sally married Dr. Fred E. Meeks at the Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. Sally and Fred met at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Sally had felt the call of God to be a medical missionary, and the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention required its medical missionaries to take fifteen hours of seminary courses to qualify for appointment. At the time Sally met Fred she had already been assigned to a Baptist hospital in Yemen.
Sally wanted to marry Fred, who was a pastor, but she questioned what that would do to her calling as medical missionary. After much prayer, Sally came to see that her calling from God could be fulfilled by serving patients in local hospitals, bringing God’s love, compassion, and healing like Jesus did in his ministry. Sally finished her nursing career working as the school nurse for Plainview High School for about 20 years.
Although she was a pastor’s wife, Sally never felt obligated to fulfill responsibilities expected of her in that role. Sally always volunteered to serve in the congregation because of her commitment to her Lord and to the calling God had given her.
Sally was the proud mother of Marnie Daviau of Fort Worth and Meredith Meeks of Plainview. Sally was preceded in death by her parents Commander John and Marion Hart, by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frederick and Lillie Meeks, and by sisters Kimberly Hart and Susan Jeanette (Jaye) Long. She is survived by her husband Fred, daughters Marnie (and husband Mark Daviau) and Meredith, by honorary daughter Carrie Wall, by her sisters Nancy Day (and husband Bob and daughters Michelle, Jeanni, and Heather) and Rebecca Block (and husband Michael and son Nathanael), by her brother-in-law Mark Meeks [and wife Debbie and daughters Lillian Shuff (and husband Rodney), Sonya Yeager-Meeks, and stepdaughter Jessica Yeager (and husband Eric Royer)] and by Jaye’s daughter Brittany and son Matthew. She is also survived by wonderful grand nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 29 at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church chapel in Plainview with Dr. Travis Hart officiating. A visitation with the family will be held at the Kornerstone Funeral Home in Plainview on Monday, October 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
