Sarah Kaylene Layton, née Castleberry, known affectionately as Kay, passed away on June 28, 2024, at the age of 83 in Lubbock, Texas. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 8th at 2:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Petersburg. Arrangements are under the personal care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.
Kay was born in El Centro, California on June 19, 1941 to Wayne and Margaret (Meador) Castleberry. She grew up in Petersburg, Texas with her siblings Sherry (Lacey), Tommye Joe (Perry) and Lenna (Collins),
In 1958, Kay married Wayne Layton in Petersburg, Texas before moving to Mansfield, Texas to raise their children Melanie, Terry and Kevin.
The returned to Petersburg in 1994, where she spent much of her time devoted to her church and many volunteer jobs. Kay led Sunday morning worship music at The First Methodist Church of Petersburg and also wrote and published The Petersburg Post for many years. She was very involved in her community, serving on the Chamber of Commerce and was active in Senior Citizens as well as Texas Extension Education Association (TEEA).
In 2022, Kay moved to Mackenzie Court Assisted Living Center where she made many new friends. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the Staff for the devoted care Mom received while living there. We would also like to thank the staff of Grayce Hospice for the compassionate care Mom and our family received in her last days.
Kay was an avid bridge player and loved to travel, especially with her sisters, daughter and granddaughters. She loved both singing and listening to gospel music, particularly The Gaither Brothers.
Preceded in death by her parents and sister, Lenna. She is survived by sisters Sherry of Denver, Colorado and Tommye Jo of Gainsville, Texas; children, Melanie Morris and husband Vinoka of Petersburg, Terry Layton of Ocala, Florida, and Kevin Layton and wife Pamela of Petersburg; her 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and a multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to gather Sunday afternoon, July 7th, 4pm to 7pm to a come and go visitation, at the home of Vinoka and Melanie Morris.
The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church of Petersburg or the charity of your choice.
