Tulia, Texas—Verna Lea Dutton, 95, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at the Central Church of Christ with Mr. Toby Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 12, 2022, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm at the funeral home.
Verna was born on September 29, 1926, in Anson, Texas to Vernon and Azalea Watts. She grew up in Anson and graduated from Anson High School. She attended Abilene Christian University for a couple of years. She married Bernell Dutton on June 24, 1946, in Anson. They farmed near Hamlin for a couple of years before moving to Kress in 1952, then to Hereford in 1955 and then they moved to Tulia in 1957 where they farmed and raised their children. She lived in her home for 65 years. She was a homemaker and a farmer’s wife. She also worked some at Bates Shoe Store. She was a member of Central Church of Christ where she taught bible class for 60 years until the age of 89. Her two other joys in life were sewing and gardening.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Vernon and Azalea Watts, her husband: Bernell Dutton on September 12, 1988, two brothers: Arvell Watts and Gary Watts, one sister: Janelle Dyer, her son: Alan Dutton and two grandchildren: Natisha Dutton and Matt Dutton.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Pam and Deaune McCrary of Tulia, her son and daughter-in-law: Barry and Jana Dutton of Tulia, her daughter-in-law: Terry Dutton of Tulia, her sister: Darlene Watts of Tulia, eight grandchildren: Chris Dutton, Marshal Dutton, Jenny Owens and husband Darrell, Tiffany DeGraf, Shayla Hartman and husband Reece, Taylor Dutton and wife Lizzie, Amy Bonds and Cindy George and husband Colton, 17 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
