Worthy “Shorty” Cantwell, 88, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018 in Plainview. Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at the Northwest Church of Christ in Plainview with J. Henderson, officiating and Lewis Senter, Lyle Miller, Gerald Bedwell and Thomas Richburg assisting. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm, Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at Kornerstone Funeral Directors.
Worthy was born October 29, 1929 in DeLeon, Texas to James Thomas and Opal (Tarrance) Cantwell of Brownwood, Texas. He graduated from Blanket High School in Brown County in 1949, and married Bonnie Moore on August 24, 1950 in Odessa, Texas. He started working for Gifford-Hill Pipe Co. on February 6, 1950 in Lubbock. He was transferred to Plainview in June 1951 to help start Gifford-Hill Pipe Co. as crew foreman. He worked for Gifford-Hill Pipe Co. for 29 years. Worthy started his own Cantwell Irrigation Pipe business in 1979 and retired in 2002 with 52 years of irrigation pipe. He was also part owner of Western Ag Pipe Company in Plainview for 40 years.
Worthy was drafted into the U.S. Army for two years in 1952, serving 13 months in the 3rd Medical Battalion in Korea. He returned home back to Plainview to continue to work for Gifford-Hill Pipe Co. in 1954. Worthy wanted to please the farmer and seeing the flow of water and the good green crops maturing at the end of harvest time.
He was preceded in death by his parents James and Opal Cantwell; sister, Vivone Arnold and her husband Fred; and a brother Nolan Cantwell.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years Bonnie Cantwell of Plainview; daughter, Watha Cantwell of Plainview; son, Benny Cantwell and wife Connie of Plainview; four grandchildren, Craig Peters and wife Misty of Canyon; Melissa Adlong and husband Chris of Justin, Kimberly Henry and husband Justin of Levelland, Justin Cantwell and wife Kristie of Seagraves; eleven great-grandchildren, Dalton, Kylee, Shelby, Christopher, Mason, Jalayne, Laynie, Avery, Kody, David and Wyatt.
